Invest In A Great Vacuum

No, just any vacuum will not do. Some vacuums only skim the surface, leaving oils, dirt, and debris behind. Others give you the deep clean you need every time.

Look for a vacuum that’s got a strong motor and suction. The rollers should help lift dirt up from the base so that it can be sucked away.

Apply Correct Vacuum Technique

Vacuuming seems like it should be the easiest thing in the world to do. But proper vacuum technique isn’t common sense. It’s a learned skill.

Never let someone cut corners when they’re vacuuming your carpet. If it’s not done right, it’s only a little better than not doing it at all.

The vacuum should be very slowly run across the carpet. This allows time for any nastiness that’s worked its way down to come up.

Your carpet should be vacuumed at least 1X a week for every person or pet you have living in the home. If the room is rarely used, then once a week will suffice.

Get A Good Spot Cleaner And Apply Proper Technique

Always begin by blotting the stain with water and drying it in soft motions outward from the center. Don’t rub back and forth. This will damage the luxury carpet.

Then apply a spot cleaner. You can buy a spot cleaner that should take care of most types of stains. But regular water-soluble, special water-soluble, and fat-soluble stains respond best to different cleaners.

Always test your cleaners on an inconspicuous place on the carpet before applying.

Regular water-soluble stains include:

  • Jams & Jellies

  • Milk

  • Washable ink

  • Liquor

  • Soft drinks

Special water-soluble stains include:

  • Blood

  • Chocolate

  • Coffee

  • Wine

  • Tea

For regular water-soluble mix:

  • 1/4 tsp non-bleach laundry detergent or white vinegar

  • 32 oz distilled water

For these you’ll need:

  • 1 tsp ammonia

  • 1 cup water

If the carpet is wool or wool blend, don’t apply the special water-soluble spot remover. It will damage the carpet.

For oily and waxy stains:

  1. Place a paper towel on the stain.

  2. Run a warm (not hot) iron over the surface.

  3. Remove the paper towel. The oil and wax should be mostly on the paper towel now.

  4. Gently wipe the rest away with a soft cloth.

Deep Clean Your Carpets

Have the carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year. Spring cleaning is best because it removes any dirt that was allowed to infiltrate into the carpet before days grow warmer and muggier. Humidity can lock in the dirt.
